quarantine life, year 1 (HTB #12)

virtual event bonanza, a look at the last year in quarantine, and yes, we need to talk about substack

one year ago today, i went to work for the last time.

the summer before last, i bought an anime mystery goody bag that included an ‘uwu’ face mask/covering, which i found adorable and hilarious, and i put it away for maybe the flu season, or hayfever season, or just the next con where i could be the most uwu with the least amount of effort. little did i know, that mask would come in pretty handy in the days before the first lockdown in 2020.

flash forward, a year later: i’m washing several three-layer masks (and double-layer ones with filter pockets) with antibacterial laundry cleanser in my kitchen sink. i have a mask storage system, a double-mask routine, and i’ve figured out exactly what my favourite kinds of masks are and made sure i got plenty of them for when they don’t sell them en masse anymore (because you bet come flu season i’ll be busting these out for a long time).

we sure have come a long way in 365 days.

originality is dead. long live Disney. 💋 (HTB #11)

i have thoughts about that Cruella trailer; plus new podcast episodes, live shows on Stereo, and a free convention for emerging SFF creatives

A screenshot from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, in which Renée the rhino tells my avatar that "birthdays just make you feel smarter, y'know?"

oh the things i have learned

what a difference a year makes eh? normally around this time i’d say some vague platitude about how i feel like maybe i’ve changed a bit but not a whole lot, but i’ll be honest: 2020 has taught me so much about myself, the world, and the truly important things in life. i have a weird thing about odd numbers not being the best for me age-wise (not sure where i got it from, shrug), but given how 30 was, i’m looking at 31 with a whole different attitude.

(gratuitous self-portrait from a couple of weeks ago… oh yeah, i wear glasses now!)

well, hello there friends. once again, it has been a minute since i last wrote you, at first for a lack of things to say, then for a lack of will to live, and then for a lack of time, as i went back to work on the london riverbank. (oh yeah! i survived redundancy! and i’m selling tickets for the theatre again! while we’re still in a raging pandemic! woohoo! this excitement isn’t the slightest bit sarcastic!)

can u tell i’ve been mentally exhausted? 😅

but hey! let’s jaunt through the last few months of news—mostly sf related, because that’s where all the fun has been lately.

quarantine life, week 1 (HTB #5)

/straps self in for the long haul

on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being hunky dory and 1 being an endless cosmic scream into the void, how’s your sanity holding up in quarantine so far?

i’d say i’m at an 8 at the minute. like, i’m a bit miffed and ever so slightly anxious, but overall i’m fine. for now. i managed to go on a walk today, and the weather was lovely and sunny, and i quite enjoyed it, though stepping into a couple of shops and being super mindful of all the other people there got me real weary real quick… plus i just got word my workplace will stay closed till end of june, so i’m a bit like—

sooo just so i don’t go crazy, i’m keeping myself entertained and, crucially, busy af. because if i’m not occupying my brain, i’m going to wither and die. SO! let me throw some things at you real quick.
